The objective of this article is to investigate various aspects of seigneurial revenue as it fluctuated at Saint-Lager in Beaujolais. Documents show three characteristics regarding finance in this system: 1) 40% of seigneurial revenue came from feudal rights; 2) revenue (principally seigneurial tithe and métayage) depended more and more on the grape harvest (especially since the beginning of the 18th century), and on the whole, revenue fluctuated along with the price of wine; and 3) the cens (feudal rent), based on commodities but paid in money, was not influenced by price fluctuation. In other words, it kept its real value. Thus, prosperity in the second half of the 18th century brought a certain vivacity to seigneurial finance. However, the Revolution forced it to accept brutal change in abolishing feudal rights.
