The methods comprised a keyword and hand search of PubMed and the online version of Igakuchuozasshi (Japana Centra Revuo Medicina). Keywords for three concepts were searched in Japanese and English in the respective databases: shinrikyoiku and ‘psychoeducation’; togoshitchosho’ and ‘schizophrenia’; and kainyukenkyu and ‘intervention research’. The search results produced a total of 22 hits with 17 English studies via PubMed and 5 Japanese studies via the online Igakuchuozasshi. The studies were generally classified into those that evaluated the effects of stand-alone psychoeducation programs( n = 15) and combined programs that integrated psychoeducation with cognitive-behavioral therapy( n = 7) for comparison. The literature review revealed that psychoeducation had a positive effect on patients with schizophrenia; however, the majority of research only measured the short-term effects. Furthermore, of the limited number of studies that actually measured the long-term effects of psychoeducation for one year or more, all were conducted outside Japan.
