He is kind to his beautiful wife and proud of his son and heir. Hetton Abbey is where he has grown up and he is hoping that in his sons day his house would recover its fame. Instead of arriving in the City, Tony is captured and made prisoner by illiterate Mr Todd who loves Dickens. Every day Tony has to read aloud Dickens's works for him and there is no hope to go back to Hetton. It is a kind of punishment for his selfish love for Hetton and himself.
